The nanny boom: pandemic drives parents to seek extra help
Nanny agencies are experiencing unprecedented demand as parents seek an extra set of hands to ease the pressure of home schooling and working from home.
Agencies are struggling to find enough nannies to meet the demand, with some placing three times as many nannies into homes than they did before the pandemic.
“During the pandemic, many families lost the support of interstate and overseas grandparents due to border closures, and au pairs left the country,” she said.
“Being caught in lockdown with home schooling and kids not being able to go to childcare was a point of trauma. Parents never wanted to be in that situation again. Everyone was at home and it made total sense to outsource.”
Annemarie Sansom, director of Night Nannies, places eight nannies a week into homes across Melbourne and Sydney, twice as many placements as before the pandemic.
She said many families were seeking nannies for the first time after struggling with the demands of working from home, home schooling and childcare closures.
It’s a unique domestic arrangement that has also created challenges for nannies, who were previously used to working alone with children while their parents worked in an office.
“Now the nannies are in the family home, with the parents, too, in a squishy environment,” Ms Sansom said.
