Facts about Travelling with your Nanny
June 8, 2011 By lorabrawley
I always get lots of questions this time of year about traveling with a nanny. Here are the facts you need to know.
When a nanny travels with her employers on business and family trips, travel time begins when the nanny leaves the family’s home and ends when she returns to the family’s home.
The nanny’s travel schedule is determined by the family’s needs. It’s not uncommon for the nanny to be on call throughout the trip or work in flexible blocks of time throughout the day (e.g. from wake up until after breakfast, during nap time, from dinner through late night).
During trips, employers are responsible for all travel related costs including transportation, lodging, car rentals on location, meals, and any entertainment fees the nanny incurs while working. The nanny is responsible for any expenses incurred on her personal time. She should be given a meal allowance for meals off duty or be allowed to charge them to the family’s account. Sightseeing tours or nights out are personal excursions a nanny can choose to skip. Meals are a necessity and should be covered by the employer.
Many nannies require private sleeping quarters. That may be a bedroom in a two bedroom suite shared with the children or a hotel room shared with another nanny. The specifics are less important than making sure the nanny receives some downtime. Traveling with employers is often stressful for nannies and getting away to take a quick nap, watch some TV or catch up on Facebook can make all the difference.
And remember, even when traveling nannies must be paid for every hour worked and if she’s working a shorter than normal work week, she still receives her guaranteed weekly salary.
