Baby brain development - how can we help?

Baby brain development

How can we help our baby with their brain development? • Cuddles and loving facial expressions • Sounds and talking to your baby • Music • Touch such as massage • Varying environments such as inside and outside • Activities

By the time is 3 years old the brain has formed 1000 trillion connections – about as twice as many as an Adult. Some brain cells called Neurons have already been hard wired before birth. They control: • Breathing • Heartbeat • Reflexes – essentials for survival

Others are waiting to be hooked up.

Peak production in the brain has been proven with much research to be between the ages of birth and 10 years of age. During that time the brains weight triples in size.

Scientists believe that stimulation that young babies and children receive determines which connections form in the brain. (1-3yrs are crucial years) Children who have lived in orphanages in current day such as third world countries with little or no stimulation get their physical needs met but the developmental or emotional stimulation to develop properly.

When a connection is used in the early years, it becomes permanent. For example different languages when children are exposed to a second language early in life their brain keeps those sounds and neurons related to both languages. This in turn makes it easier for the child to pick up the second language more easily than a child that has not been exposed. Often children learning two languages from infanthood start to speak later than a child who has only one language to process.

If a child is not spoken to or read to in the early years they may have difficulty with language skills later on. Or a child who rarely interacts with others may have difficulty socializing as they grow up. An infants brain thrives on feedback from its environment. Young babies often try to mimim our facial expressions & sounds from 6 weeks such as similing or poking out their tongue Sounds are another way they will try to mimic its Mother or Father. Have you ever noticed how when youre talking on the phone your baby may start cooing and trying to copy your sounds?

This is also relevant to responses such as crying and your responsive reaction or non reaction. Mouthing toys for older baby's is another way they explore and learn about their environment. How do you know what grass or dirt tastes like? Maybe because you tasted it when you were a baby?

Sing to your baby, cuddle your baby, massage your baby, talk to your baby and play with your baby. All of this stimulation helps your babys brain grow and develop. Enjoy!
